Exploring the Colorful Coexistence of Uruguay Contemporary Art

2025-08-05

In June, Chongqing is filled with the warmth and vitality of early summer. At the Cloud Art Gallery on the 72nd floor of One Altitude of Raffles City Chongqing, a visual feast from the Southern Hemisphere was unveiled.

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the independence of Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the Consulate-General of Uruguay in Chongqing, Chongqing International Cultural Exchange Center, Raffles City Chongqing, and Hong Kong VA Gallery have jointly organized the “Colorful Coexistence—Uruguay Contemporary Art Exhibition” in Chongqing from June 13 to July 2. A total of 64 artworks were created by four Uruguayan artists. They used color as their language and creativity as their bridge to blend Uruguay’s natural and cultural elements with Chongqing’s multidimensional landscapes, creating a fascinating artistic fusion.

“This exhibition is another model collaboration in culture and art between Uruguay and China. It reflects the strong friendship between the two countries. The selected works on exhibition fully demonstrate Uruguay’s multiculturalism, the artist’s talents, and its unique and diverse natural landscapes.” said Fernando Lugris, the Ambassador of Uruguay to China. He added that the four participating artists have all had an in-depth understanding of China and have visited Chongqing. With some of their works created in this beautiful mountain city, they expressed their love for China and Chongqing.

Zhou Yi, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, addressed that with the support of the Embassy of Uruguay in Beijing and the Consulate-General in Chongqing, exchanges and cooperation between Chongqing and Uruguay in various fields such as economy and culture, have deepened and yielded fruitful results. This art exhibition will further enhance public understanding of Uruguay among local residents.

The exhibition features a variety of artworks, including paintings, photographs, and prints. Patricia Bentancur’s “In Between_Homes” series constructs cultural memories between China and Uruguay. Federico Arnaud deconstructs Chongqing’s three-dimensional space with colors of South America. Gastón Chavat calls for environmental protection through collage art. Marcelo Cattani Sánchez showcases the culture and nature of Uruguay through imagery. These artworks vividly interpret the concept of “coexistence”, reflecting both the inclusiveness of Uruguayan culture and the fruitful achievements in cultural and artistic exchanges between China and Uruguay.
